"Le Bon Moine", song for piano, music written by Leopold Gangloff in late 1800. Rare two copies of the same piece in 2 different formats (one large, one small). Colored caricatural lithographic illustration signed by Faria.
French composer and conductor, born in Saint-Pierre-les-Calais in 1856 and died at the age of 42 after a long illness in 1898. His brother, Charles Gangloff, was an illustrator (1870-1941). A pianist he was accompanied by singers. He wrote polkas and marches. Many singers like Paulus, Jules Mevisto, Ernest Vaunel, Albert Caudieux and others sang with his compositions. His most famous for Germinal/Le plumet or Le Ventre de Paris based on writings of Emile Zola and William Busnach.
About the artist: Candido Aragonez de Faria (Faria) was born in Brazil in 1840 and moved to France in 1882. He was a Brazilian caricaturist, painter and poster designer. He illustrated posters for performers and the cinema, but also lithographic music scores in small and large size (which you have here).
Interestingly his father studied in Montpellier and specialized in cholera. He founded the hospital de Caridade de Laranjeiras and he died in a cholera epidemic in 1855.
Faria started his artwork for many local magazines satirizing local politicians and clergy - here the music sheets with a Monk on the front cover. He introduced Chromolithography in South America. He established his workshop in Paris working with Charles Clerice of the Clerice Freres illustrators. From 1902 up to his death in 1911 he was, with about 300 posters, the main poster designer for the film company Pathe.
