Madhubani is a very distinct style of painting from the Mithila region of India. Traditionally order created by women to decorate the mud walls of their homes, these have since graduated to adorn clothes, fabrics, tapestries and décor. These delicate paintings used to be done with homemade tools like twigs, brushes and matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments. Very often they were created to celebrate special occasions, such as marriage, birth, and festivals like Durga Puja.
Here is one such Madhubani Dupatta, created on soft off-white Chanderi - a mix of cotton and silk, with a fine lustre. This painting depicts the fish and the peacock - both considered very auspicious in Indian Madhubani mythology. The peacock depicts wealth, and the fish denotes fertility. At the centre of the dupatta is Lord Krishna again, as he is at teh centre of the universe. As typical in Madhubani art, the painting is filled up with multiple tiny strokes, right from their clothes to the branches of the tree.
