order Ballintoy on the North Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland overlooks the wild Atlantic Ocean. This is the land of Giants, Leprechauns, Banshees, the brave O'Neill. It's also the land of great welcomes, Guinness and The Craic. The Craic is something that is hard to describe or even define but it encompasses a warm welcome, a sense of humour, sociability, party time, wit, humour and being made to feel at home as well as many other things. When you experience it you will understand.

Not far from Ballintoy is the Giants Causeway. Local legend tells the story of the giant, Finn McCool, (also known as Fionn mac Cumhaill) who is said to have had a fight with a Scottish fellow, named Benandonner, across the sea. The rabid Finn grabbed huge rocks and hurled them into the water, forming a trail of stepping stones, hence the Giants Causeway. So when you visit Ballintoy, just remember that giants once walked there.

This rugged coast has long been a jumping off point for many migrants who left there to make new lives in foreign parts, some to America, Australia, Canada and to England and Scotland. There has long been trade and traffic between there and Scotland, which is only some sixteen miles away, and as a result there is a local dialect or language known as Ulster Scots, Ulster being the name of the Province of this part of the island of Ireland. My grandfather was indeed one of those very migrants who moved from County Antrim to live and work in Scotland. I feel equally at home in Ireland as I do in Scotland where I live and indeed visit Ireland as often as I can.

If you haven't visited Ireland you should make a trip to this land of myth and legend. You might even have seen it on television and not realised it. The rugged cliffs in this photograph and other areas nearby have featured in various successful films and TV series. So when you look at this photograph, just remember Finn MacCool and Game of Thrones.
