Slate frames have been used to mount embroidery projects since the 1500s. The straight sides allow you to tighten the fabric in both directions without distortion. The tighter the fabric the better the resulting piece of embroidery. Both the warp and the weft direction of the ground fabric can be sewn onto the frame before the pins are added to the stretcher bars. A small set of holes have been added to the main rails to allow you to sew the fabric on without the threads wrapping around the outside of the frame.
The entire frame is hand made. We finish them with 5 coasts of polyurethane, using progressively finer sand paper in between each successive coat. The resulting finish is very smooth and order will not catch even the finest silk threads.
This frame is made out of your choice of wood. Most of the wood choices are not pictured but pictures can be found on our website at tfwoodcraft.com. The frame is 12 by 18 inches. The longer measurement is the side rails (see picture for terminology). Metal pins for the stretcher bars are included.
