The swallow is a symbol of Portuguese culture,
Swallows also serve as protective amulets. Some people believe that this symbol functions as a Jewish mezuzá, the small scrolls of parchment that are placed on the shoulder pads of the doors and in Jewish temples. "There is a common connection between the Jewish people and the Portuguese diaspora," says André Apolinário. "We have sailed all over the world and are immigrants, and we always miss our homeland. A lot of people want to come back. The order swallow represents that there is a nest somewhere in Portugal, although there are Portuguese living all over the world."
It also symbolizes the union and the family "Swallows only come out of the nest when all their young come out", says Ricardo Brochado. "And they always come back."
