About Moonstone
Our love for moonstone may be as old as our moon itself. This pearly and opalescent stone, a talisman for travelers outward bound or for those on an inward journey. Long revered by ancient civilizations, Moonstone has served many purposes - an amulet of protection for travelers, a gift symbolizing passion, a catalyst for revealing a path to wisdom, and as a cure for sleeplessness.
Moonstone is the most well-known gemstone variety of orthoclase feldspar. It is composed of two feldspar species, orthoclase, and albite. Tiny inclusions of albite, a sodium aluminum silicate, are intermixed with host rock layers of orthoclase, a potassium aluminum silicate. During formation, there is a stacking of the two species into thin, flat, alternate layers. The alternating layers of different feldspars form a lamellar (scaly) structure which causes the interference of light as it enters the stone. When light falls between the layers, it scatters in many directions producing a milky, bluish luster or glow originating from below the surface of the gemstone. This phenomenon is referred to as ‘adularscence'. As the stone is turned, the aura of light appears to glow from deep within mimicking the moon's light.
Moonstone has a hardness of 6 on the Moh's scale and became a favorite of artists during the Art Nouveau Period. Moonstone is the Florida state gemstone, although it does not naturally occur in the state, but commemorates the Moon landings which departed from Kennedy Space Center.
According to Hindu mythology, moonstone was formed of solidified moonbeams. In India, moonstone is regarded as a sacred stone and it is widely believed to bring good fortune for those who wear it. In Arab countries, women were known to sew moonstone into their undergarments, because they were thought of as a symbol of fertility. In ancient Rome, moonstone was associated with the moon. It was speculated that the gem was formed from drops of moonlight. The gemstones were believed to possess the properties traditionally associated with the moon, including legends of romance, femininity, intuition, dreams, emotion, and love. At one time it was believed that if you held one in your mouth during a full moon, you could see your future.
Moonstone is also highly prized among lovers, as it's thought to arouse tender thoughts and passion. Those who possess moonstone are thought to be able to foretell their future life together as a couple. Moonstone is purported to support creative self-expression.
Moonstone is not as durable as other gemstones and so take care when storing and cleaning moonstone jewelry to avoid abrasions.
