order This lovely Victorian baby's long gown dates from c.1890. Not all Victorian long gowns were Christening gowns. It was common for a baby of either sex to wear these long gowns for several months as daily wear, and then baby was "shortened" or put into shorter gowns. Nonetheless, this lovely example would make a very nice Christening gown.
This one is made of soft fine creamy white cotton. The neck is high, with a drawstring. The dress is lavished with eyelet embroidery and tucks, quite ornate and fancy. It fastens with mother of pearl buttons all down the back.
Please use these measurements to decide if this will fit. Remember these are approximate measurements of the garment, and you should allow several inches for ease of fit.
Width across shoulders_____________: 8 1/2"
Chest__________________________: about 21"
Width of upper arm_______________: 6 1/2"
Sleeve from center back of neck to cuff: 12"
Length from center back of neck to hem: 46"
The condition is quite good. As mentioned the cotton is a creamy colour. I found a few pin specks, and a small mark on the hem. There are stitch marks where some tuck were let out...but this appears to have happened before the dress was made up, a puzzle. Not obvious though. It's been laundered and pressed so it's fresh and clean. This is an exceptionally nice antique gown.
