These prints were originally pages in a Hokusai Manga album. A collection of sketches about daily life, nature and mythical scenes. Already in Hokusai s time this was a immensly popular series of albums in Japan. Later when great painters of the 19th century discovered Japanese woodblock prints they were also collectors items in Europe. Today original Hokusai Manga albums and prints are very sought after items. The first Manga album Hokusai did was as a instruction manual for his students. Because it was so popular, also by the people of Edo, now called Tokyo, he made 14 other volumes.The sketches are drawn in a free and spontaneous style. The word Manga refers to that and originates from the Chinese language.

Depicted on the left print are two figures who are probably immortals. The right print shows several, probably Chinese, male immortals, one with a dolphin, and one female immortal in a boat. Chinese drawing and painting was a great influence for Hokusai. He is best known for his print The Great Wave Of Kanagawa from the famous 36 views of Mount Fuji series and for his Manga album series. Hokusai s designs show his unique style and his great skill and creativity.
