This is a great example of how the Victorians had an eye for detail. It was probably originally used to present pearl jewelry, since the top is an enameled design of an open oyster with a pearl inside amoung seaweed. The rich colors in the textured, three dimensional enamel are maroon red, sandy speckled orange, olive seaweed green and gold inside the oyster. It is all on a brass or bronze horseshoe shaped box that hinges open. The inside is midnight blue velvet with two little hooks on the top to secure earrings. It measures 4 x 3 inches order and .5 inch deep. The box does not close all the way ( see image ), plus the enamel has worn off in places ( see images ). It was made, probably in England, in the 1870's, so has some loving wear on it!
If you are going to present someone with jewelry as a gift, or just as a display, this box is very special!
*** Please note: the pearl jewelry pictured is NOT included! It is just for display!***
