From my personal collection of hand-made order. . . An excellent example of a primitive that is still useful today!!
Antique Primitive SOLID Walnut 2-Section Cutlery Caddy ~ Heavily Constructed!
Circa early 1900's
The woodworker who made this caddy meant business!!
~1/2" thick long walls
~3/8" thick short walls
~5/8" thick bottom board
Generous use of slot-head screws, 20 of them! (NOT hand-cut heads as the cutting is too uniform)
which, by the 1890's, were mostly machine-made in factories ;)
Overall, the caddy measures ~11-1/4" long x ~7-7/8" wide x ~3-5/8 high (~5-7/8" high incl. handle)
Each of the two sections measures ~3" x ~10-1/4"
The caddy is no lightweight, weighing 3 lbs. 10 oz.
--Original shellac (or some other surface, non-penetrating) finish
--Original patina, which includes the yellowed, white paint on the bottom, the blue paint drip (last photo)near the one corner,
and the little odd bits of newspaper stuck to the bottom.
--The ~1" long chip, missing from the corner (see last photo) is Perfect! as it helps verify that this caddy is solid wood,
not walnut veneered.
--The color of the caddy is exactly as it should be for shellacked walnut ;)
Any attempt to clean off the paint, etc. will also remove the original finish . . .
The caddy, in my opinionated opinion, should be enjoyed as it is ;)
One of the four little brown felt feet has gone missing (photo #8), so I will include four new brown felt feet
