Peace Dollar (1921 - 1935)

· Specifications:

1. Diameter: 38.1 mm

2. Weight: 26.73 g

3. Composition: Silver .900, Copper .100 (.77344 oz ASW)

4. Designer: Anthony DiFrancisci

5. Edge: Reeded

6. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Denver

· The dollar coin of new design issued between 1921 and 1935 was a commemorative peace coin. The Peace Dollar was issued without congressional sanction, under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918 which referred to bullion and in no way spoke to design. Anthony DiFrancisci, a medalist, designed this dollar. His monogram is located in the field of the coin under the neck of Liberty.

· The new Peace Dollar was placed into circulation on January 3, 1922. 1.006.473 pieces dated 1921 had been struck in December 1921. The original high-relief design used in 1921 was found to be impractical and was modified to low or shallow relief in 1922 after 35,401 coins had been made with the majority melted at the mint. The ultra-rare Matte and Satin finish Proofs of 1922 are of both the high and low relief styles.

· Legislation dated August 3, 1964, authorized the coinage of 45 million silver dollars, and 316,076 Peace Dollars dated 1964 were struck at the Denver Mint in 1965. Plans for completing this coinage was abandoned, and all 1964 dated coins were melted by the mint.

· Key Dates: 1921, 1922 High-relief, 1922 Stain Finish Proof, 1922 Matte finish Proof, 1928, 1934D (Double die obverse)

· Grade the coin by the wear on the hairlines of Liberty and the feathers of the eagle

1. Average circulated – Hair over order the eye well worn although some strands are well-defined over the ear. Some eagle feathers on top and outside edge of the wing are visible.

2. Choice – Hair lines over the brow and ear are strong, although slightly worn. Outside wing feathers at right and top are visible.

3. Extra Fine or About Uncirculated – No trace of wear with full mint luster, often noticeably marked by stains, surface marks, and contact marking.

4. Uncirculated – Purchase from a source which uses one of the professional grading organizations. Do not trust ungraded coins which claim to be uncirculated.
