Vintage Sosaku Kindai Kokeshi Doll by Artist Sato Suigai, Japanese Hand Painted Wooden Girl. This piece is stamped on the bottom for authenticity. This doll will make a wonderful addition to your collection or as gift to a friend or family member. Sato Suigai was born in 1920 in the town of Yoshioka Village, Gunma Prefecture. He started Kokeshi making in 1948. His Kokeshi dolls have won many awards, including the Prime Minister's Award in 1966. What is unique to this artist's dolls is the unusual but traditional hairstyle, the wheat, summer grass, bamboo, (symbolizing prosperity, purity, and innocence), plum blossoms, and abstract leaves. The bottom of this figurine includes his Sato Suigai's signature.
The approximate measurements are 10"H x 1-3/4"W (base) 1-5/8"W (head)l. This figurine is in excellent vintage condition, with the exception of a very small area on the back of her head. Please see photos as the area is very slight and unnoticeable.
