This is a vintage octagonal silver compact from Thailand or Siam with the image of a goddess in repousse on top. There is oxidation on the background of the deity and the ornate leaf trim around the edges to emphasize the design. It measures 3-1/8" square. The back is marked, but the marks are hard to read and partially obscured. Marks look like HAN/ARG T. 900. I believe that the ARG stands for silver, perhaps T is for Thailand, and 900 is the purity of the silver (sterling is 925). The total weight is 45.3 g. or 29.2 dwt.
The condition is pretty good order for a piece that dates to the mid 20th century, c. 1950 or so. The top is in good shape and will display well. There are a couple of minor dings near the edge on the bottom, plus the normal minor surface scratches in a piece of this age. The mirror is slightly cloudy and appears to have a crease or gash in the silvering on the back of the mirror. It looks like a crack in the photo, but you cannot feel the crack on the surface of the mirror. There is some crackling on one edge of the mirror. The original sifter screen is set in a silver bezel. The lid shuts cleanly and securely.
This is an unusual and attractive item for a collector of compacts, silver and Asian items.
