In traditional native american medicine from Mexico, owl has been known to be the "night eagle". That animal that can see clarity within the darkness and considered a powerful guide. Once the arrival of the Spanish to Mexico, Catholic religion beliefs brought about changes in how some of nature was seen. The owl then became an animal of "bad luck and omen". Currently, there has been a order resurgence of practices of many of the beliefs and traditions prior to the arrival of the Spanish. The Santa Muerte as she is known in Spanish roots from pre-hispanic times. Santa Muerte was known as Mictlantecihuatl (female essence of death). The Santa Muerte is accompanied by an owl, her guardian at all times. This can be seen in many of her representations and altars.

This exceptional piece of art instrument makes the sound of an owl. It was hand made by Maestro Artesano Martinez~Artist and Artisan Master Martinez, who is a talented and experienced artist in making Mesoamerican replicas and art. The clay utilized to make these figures are from the state of Mexico and Oaxaca. They are then fired outdoors inside a brick room. There is an extensive process for each of these pieces of art and no two will ever be exactly the same.
