This early Antique Book Extremely Rare to Find. This is USGS Professional Paper 89, 'The Fauna of the Chapman Sandstone of Maine'. Published Date 1916. This rare early book investigates certain strata that were purported to contain coal. It consists of 299 pages of text plus 'twenty seven plates of fossils collected from the formation, really beautiful book~
They include gastropods, pelecypods, and some trilobites, very interesting reference.
This Upper Silurian formation potentially correlated similar aged rocks in New York and Great Britain, and was therefor selected for special study. Fossils were collected in various locations in 'Aroostook County, Maine'.
Many of the fossils are very well preserved order and the many plates, 27 in all, illustrate them beautifully. The text is extensive an contains descriptions of all the fossils. The location is given as being a "small area in Chapman Township, (T.11, R. 3)" and there is a one-page geologic map that shows the area. The Aroostook river passes through the area. Additional details of the locations are also provided. There is also a table of the fauna that includes 125 entries!
Condition; The front cover is starting to separate apart from the binding, also the binding shows some age wear. It is All intact. This book was given to the Westminster College Library by its first owner in 1961, I purchased at a estate in New Hampshire in 2006.
I would rate this book as fine all things considered.
