Black in white America by Leonard Freed. Illustrated with 165 stunning photogravure illustrations.
Leonard Freed was in Berlin to document the building order of a wall between east and west Berlin, and took the first photo in the book, a young African American soldier. Freed was haunted by this photo of a soldier who did not live in safety at home yet was here protecting the safety of others. Leonard Freed soon traveled to the United States and began this project that became this book, documenting the themes of freedom, violence, protection and belonging.
Published by Grossman Publishers, New York. 1969. Softcover. 208 pages.
8-3/4" x 10-1/4".
In Very Good condition. Paper covers have wear consistent with age. The binding appears fragile as this is a fairly large book with pages that are glued to be spine, and since this book has been in a desert environment, it is only a matter of time before pages begin to separate. I took care while taking photos to not fully open the pages and lay the book flat. Pages are clean and unmarked.
