Sumi e-black and white kokeshi doll, 21cm / 8.26inch in height, by Yoshio order OGASAWARA (1936~), Japanese wooden kokeshi doll

This is a Sumi e-black and white kokeshi doll, by Yoshio OGASAWARA in Tohoku, Japan.
‘Sumi' means ‘black ink' in Japanese, which is used especially for Japanese calligraphy, kokeshi craftsmen use it when they draw a kokeshi's face. ‘E' means ‘picture'.

The mono colour and the eyes are painted in an almost landscape style give a chic image to this kokeshi doll.

The red colour on the top of the head, which looks like a smudge, is a natural feature of the wood.

“He was born in Togatta (miyagi prefecture) on January 22, 1936. In 1952, he started making wood turned products, continuing for about five years. At age 20 order, he began working as a craftsman in Sendai. (the central city of Miyagi) In 1965, Mr. Ogasawara apprenticed with kokeshi artisan, Eiji Asakura, and learned how to paint kokeshi, eventually making his own dolls and becoming the award winning artisan that he is today”. -from his Ogasawara kokeshi shop's flyer.-
