Sterling Vermeil Retro Era Brooch Striking Design of a Woman's Face
ITEM: A breathtaking piece of vintage Retro era jewelry design, this woman's face is a book piece that was featured in the vintage jewelry bible. I'm told that the write up suggests that this design was so popular in its day, that it is credited with starting a creative landslide of fashionable women in costume jewelry. A benchmark design, if you will. The original is thought to have been a fur clip and was so popular that soon after, dress clips and pins were also available. Executed in sterling silver with a gold wash over copper, she's a Retro Era brooch of high style and whimsy. Long hair, tightly curled up top and below, almond shaped eyes, a high forehead, high cheekbones, arched eyebrows and full lips all combine to create a vision of loveliness as feminine as they come. The gold and copper alternating to create a two tone, dimensional shadowed and highlights effect in her hair. Almost like a modern beauticians color blocking technique! With her exotic good looks, her interesting plating and her Retro design style, she's a Woman in demand! Highly collectible, very well made, signed and tested sterling. The original maker is unknown to me but I put the emphasis on original. To many who research costume jewelry design, she IS the original Retro Lady! Hip-hip, hooray!

CONDITION: In good overall vintage condition showing age appropriate wear. The piece is classic holloware, shaped, repousse style on front and capped on back with a flat back veneer. I see no dents or dings, breaks or gouges. Micro abrasions commensurate with age seen under magnification, unseen to the naked eye. The sterling has a thin gold wash over a copper plate, giving it a full, warm, lustrous tone. The wash is called vermeil. That vermeil shows a few pin point spots order of tarnish or darkening. I'm loathe to polish them for fear of losing that rich, warm tone from patina, or worse, losing the vermeil altogether. They're not overly noticeable and so I've left it as is. Minor issue overall and of no real consequence to form or function. But there, and so, noted. I always suggest using the zoom feature to ascertain for yourself, what the condition is as your ratings and mine may differ. Keeping in mind that this piece of costume jewelry has been knocking around for more than half a century! The pin back is intact and functional with a rollover style clasp in working order.
