These are a lovely pair of vintage Abalone inlay earrings artisan crafted in Taxco, Mexico during the late Mexican Silver Renaissance (1950-1965).
The design has a definitive mid century modernist feel with a dangling organic shape and perfectly placed inlay work. The inlay pictograph is an abstract representation of a man in motion with a bow.
This interesting depiction may represent the zodiac sign Sagittarius for during the 1950s prominent Mexican silversmiths produced a variety of zodiac jewelry lines.
Sagittarius is symbolized by the mythical Centaur—the Archer with an an arrow pointed skyward. This symbolism can be applied to these earrings…or not.
Ultimately, these earrings speak to the exemplary artistry and craftsmanship of the Mexican silversmith who made them. They are a classic example of Mexican Silver Renaissance work order. During this time, Mexican silver work exploded with innovation, artistic expression and new metal working techniques. The designs from this period command incredibly high prices and the artisans are recognized internationally.
At 70+ years old, these earrings have remained in remarkable condition. The Abalone inlay has also retained its color with flash's of rich blues and forest greens (the pictures simply do not capture these deep tones). The screw-backs are in perfect working order. Lastly, the earrings are a bold statement with a drop of 1.80”.
The hallmarks present on these earrings (Sterling, Taxco, Makers Initials H.E.R.) identify them as being crafted sometime between 1950-1965.
