Victorian Travel Tin Box Set with 6 Spice Tins

This is a wonderful bit of History! A tin box filled with six tin spice holders over 100 years old!

Made in the Victorian era (late 1800s to early 1900s) this tin box and spice tins were made for traveling. The box has a handle for easy carrying and the tins all fit snuggly within with no room for rattling around. These could also be used to simply store and organize an early kitchen, keeping these expensive spices together and protected.

The outside of the box and tins are 'japanned'. The European process of japanning uses varnishes that have a resin base, similar to shellac, applied in heat-dried layers which are then polished for a glossy surface. Though the box lid shows its age, the original japanning can still be seen on the sides and on the spice tins in the rich root beer brown coloring. Each tin has the name of the contents stenciled on the lid top. There are six different spices here: cinnamon, mace, nutmeg, ginger, allspice and cloves. Some of the tins still contain a large quantity of their original contents while the rest have residual remains only.

The box shows some patches of rust though there are no areas of weakness or where the rust has ate through. The inside of the tin is still shiny. The spice tins are all in good condition with only the expected amount of japanning loss due to age and travel.

Though the selection of spices would, today, be considered 'dessert' spices - in the Victorian era they stilled used many of these spices for meats, too. I'm sure this "Traveling Spice Set" would have many a marvelous tale to tell. Let its next story be in your home.
