My favourite wildflowers as a child were white bells or “phonograph flowers” as my grandmother called them. It seemed to me that in the evenings, after an busy summer day full of work and hassle, insects - various bugs and spiders - gathered and sat comfortably on thin blades of grass, listening to foreign jazz streaming from these phonographs, as my grandfather was doing in his rocking chair.
