I know this was my father's who was raised on a farm in.
order I know this was my father's who was raised on a farm in Chester County, PA. He was born the year the Titanic went down, 1912. It is a funny thing to me that he was given this muff to use, maybe when he went skating as I know carriages were gone by the time he was born. He told me he used to ride a pony to school and I thought that was the best thing ever. It is quite possible, but I don't know for sure, that a relative used it a generation before him and it was kept by my grandmother or grandfather. That would make this a Victorian piece.
It is very, very soft and warm, the interior fabric is worn and I think horsehair may have been used to help the fur keep its' shape. The muff is only 7" wide and 13" in diameter. There are some worn/loved spots and the seam is in tack.
We all used to rub it and put our hands in it when we were little.
Now, grandparents of college students and reaching "that age" ourselves, we are ready to share some treasures.
What to do with it today? It has been tucked away for many years but maybe it would work with a doll collection, or an antique display or a special occasion.
