1400s Spanish coins, King Enrique IV, treasure of 14 pieces, metal detector finds !!
I am a metal detectorist and I communicate and trade with other detectorists around the world. I clean the ‘dirt of the ages' off of the trade coins myself, as I attest in my little COA.
This lot consists of 14 copper coins found in Spain with a metal detector, as shown. Some of the coins have much wear.
These rare coins date from the late “Reconquest” and order into the unification period.
Reconquest was a period in the history of the Iberian Peninsula of about 780 years between the Muslim / Umayyad conquest of Hispania in 711, the expansion of the Christian kingdoms throughout Hispania, and the fall of the (last Muslim) Nasrid kingdom of Granada in 1492.
King Enrique (or Henry) of Castille and Leon was the half-brother of Isabella I (who eventually married Ferdinand and supported Columbus' voyages to the New World); Isabella became the heir to Enrique's throne.
Enrique was known as The Impotent. Born in 1425, he led a life of political intrigue leading to his ascending the throne in 1454 at the age of 29. He was said to be tall, blonde and well-built, but had a disfigured face from a childhood accident. He was married to Blanche II of Navarre at the age of 15, an arranged marriage. In May 1453, the marriage was annulled on the grounds that Enrique was sexually impotent and could not consummate his marriage because of a curse that had been placed upon him. His impotence supposedly affected only his relations with Blanche, since Enrique soon married Joan of Portugal. More intrigues left Isabella I as the heir to Enrique's throne when he died in 1474.
