Hand made and hand woven oak splint basket. The collector from whom I got this told me this style of basket is sometimes called a "buttocks basket", or sometimes a "Crown basket". It is a little different from a classic buttocks basket (which as the name suggests typically has two lobes), as this has 5 lobes. It was originally skillfully made, but I think over time and possibly because of use it appears to be a little out of round or a slightly distorted shape, as if one side of the basket had particularly heavy or bulky things stored and it caused things to go out of whack. I'm learning that the way the wood handle connects to the basket on both sides are almost like a signature, so someone with a heck of a lot more order basket knowledge than me might be able to identify the maker and place. This one is not signed. The collector thought this was likely from Tennessee or the Carolinas, possibly Kentucky, and neither of us are sure about the age, but it seems fairly recently made. I doubt this is more than 30 years old. The inside is a little dusty. The basket measures about 9" wide across the handle by 11" wide and about 8 1/2" tall. The basket is in good condition. Unusual shape and size.
