Product Name: Porceleyne Fles - 1912!, a hand-painted Delft Blue gin jar, produced for order gin producer 'Erven Bols', code AH = 1912

A beautiful and very well preserved 110 year old antique hand-painted Delft Blue gin jug. This jug was made by the oldest factory in the world in Delft - which still makes Delft Blue items -, namely the Porceleyne Fles, for the Amsterdam gin distillery 'Erven Lucas Bols'. The beautiful images, including typical Dutch sailing ships, on this jug are in 1912! painted by Mr P.L. Dijkman. Mr Dijkman was employed by the Porceleyne Fles from 1882 - 1922. At the bottom, the initials of this painter, namely an edited capital D, are still clearly visible. Also on the bottom is the mark of the Porceleyne Fles and the year code AH, which stands for the year 1912. De Porceleyne Fles The Porceleyne Fles is now known as Royal Delft-Porceleyne Fles. The history of Royal Delft begins in 1653 with the foundation of De Porceleyne Fles, the only Delft pottery factory that is still in operation today. Throughout the centuries, the company has been characterized by tradition and innovation. Lucas Bols In 1649 a certain Pieter Jacobsz Bultius bought a house on the Rozengracht in Amsterdam; he called this house "het Lootsje" and sold wine and perhaps spirits. Pieter Bols died in 1669 at the age of 49. After his widow Clara also died in 1678, son Lucas (or Luycas), born in 1652, continued the business. He started by distilling brandy and liqueur and expanded considerably. When he made his will in 1713, five stills were in use and he owned several properties in the area. The company remained family owned until 1816. In 1816 the last male heir of the Bols family died, after which the company was sold and continued under the name "Erven Lucas Bols". In 1868 Christiaan Moltzer became co-director. The new director modernized the factory and also started to advertise that Bols would be the oldest liqueur distillery in the world, "founded around 1575" – a story that is still upheld by the current distilling group Lucas Bols N.V.. The jug is, for a jug of 110 years old, in a beautiful condition, there are no chips or (hair) cracks, and there is only a small amount of craquelure.
