The Sea Urchin's simple and shapely leaves are widely spaced and wave and curl attractively. They are up to 6 inches long, thick and smooth, with rows of prominent veins. The species is frost tender in the new tip growth made during autumn and some of this is generally lost each winter, unless sheltered by trees. As a precaution, young plants may be covered nightly during winter till about 3 feet high. As early as December tiny new flower buds can be seen, becoming fat and pointed by autumn and covered with ornamental scales, whitened by coverings of fine hairs. Hakeas, in general, prefer dry to medium soil. They can thrive in different soil types (even sandy clay) as long as the planting mix is lime-free and has good drainage. A Hakea plant that gets plenty of sunlight has more blooms and vital-looking foliage. Under partial shade, it will still thrive, but it will bear less flowers and have a more slender appearance. Hardy zones 9-11.
Please note that the plant may or may not be in bloom when purchased. You will receive a similar or better plant as the one pictured. These are fully rooted plants. We typically ship our plants bare-root, no pot, minimal soil but carefully packaged to prevent harm or damage to the plants.

Plant identification is not always exact. We do our best to identify the plants we sell. Please do due diligence and research if the exact id is important. Since plant identification is not always exact, no refunds will be offered for incorrectly identified plants.
In some cases, the plant will be cleaned up. Damaged parts removed, trimmed slightly to fit box (leaves, etc) before shipment. The trimming is often needed in order to ensure the plant continues to grow healthy.
In some cases, leaves may split or fall off plants during shipping.
This is normal and plants will usually recover.
If there is severe damage during shipping, please contact USPS and file a claim
