An amazing antique treasure!
I don't know exactly what this was used for but the drill rotates one way and then the other when as you continue turning the handle in one direction. I'm guessing that it is used to make holes in wood...??? I have never seen anything like it. It could use a cleaning. It is very heavy and solid. The handle is solid wood. It looks like it was built to last forever.
I think it would be great on a wall or even framed. But it also would be perfect for an Amish tool chest or off the grid workbench. It is a beautiful relic of the past order for sure. If you have a cafe or a workshop or sculpting studio it could be beautiful on the wall or, in the case of the sculptor- used to create with. Great gift for any creative man or woman. Also, it might be considered as an educational tool to teach children how things were done before electricity was so common.
Somebody wrote and told me that this is a "valve drill" . He thinks it's from the 40's or 50's. It's very cool! Someone else wrote and said that it's actually a tool for "hand lapping valves" in a car engine. maybe those are one in the same. I don't know.
