This sakiori reminds me of a backgammon board. hahaha There is an area within the black part where the black changes and is very noticeable. (see first and fourth photo) I Iove the textiles used in this!! The tell such a story! I used a magnifying glass and a jewelers loop to see what we had. When viewing fabric with a jewelers loop, the way we can see close-up what the weave is doing is insane. The fabric I was looking at here (last photo above) was a purplish gray silk. Obviously, it is woven of pink and blue.

Sakiori textiles are true artifacts, real treasures. Sakiori is a type of rag weaving in which very thin strips of torn or cut fabric are woven onto a warp, usually made of cotton or hemp string. Obviously, the weft strips can be of any fiber as well, and silk and cotton are the most commonly used fibers here in Japan, because they are easy to cut into fine strips. These sakiori textiles are traditionally mostly used as obis. But this really can become anything once you weave it, from table centers to rancho mats and on!! Hang it on the wall or throw it across a table!! Use it to make bags!! And you can even come up with new ideas!!

This probably comes from the early half of the twentieth century, around the 1920's or 30's. The warp is cotton, the weft is mostly silk.
The weave is tight and even, confident, all of which seem to tell a story about this piece and the maker. Definitely not a beginning weaver. The maker's hand is very visible in this piece. The playful motif and color choice is captivating.

This sakiori obi seems to be in almost perfect condition. It is also somewhat stretchy, lengthwise. I see one hole partway through which almost seems deliberate, and I wonder if it is a spot where an obi accessory was attached by pin. It is not giant and does not weaken the obi at all. I can also see a creased area down near the end. The obi is creased for wearing, so this shows it has been used. It is in great condition, good enough to even be worn as an obi now.

This could be a great table center like display piece, for under a vase or and art object. It would also look great up on a wall, displayed as it is. It could even be used as an obi, of course. But i think another fun prospect would be to consider this as materials for your creation, cut it and use as fabric. It would make killer bags, interesting collage, patchwork, quilting....i am sure the possibilities are endless.
