This architectural corbel of the Bamberg Greenman is one of most famous of all Green Men, the "archetype" so to speak. He is situated under the statue of the Rider. order He gazes intently off to one side, as if he heard something! It is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth each spring.
I painstakingly recreated this sculpture in 1994, using only one photo as reference...but I love how he turned out! He has a hollowed out back to make light weight and a wire so he can be hung upon a wall or sit on a table or shelf. Each sculpture is individually cast and finished so is unique in color and feel.
This Bamberg Greenman is a great gift, good for interior & exterior made from polymer modified gypsum cast stone.
The original piece was carved from dark gray limestone in 1237 by an anonymous medieval stone carver. His watchful gaze peers out from acanthus leaves in the form of a corbel. This carving is one of the supporting brackets for the Bamberg rider, in the nave of the Bamberg Cathedral. To this day, the corbel on the other side has never been carved and the Greenman alone supports the Rider.
