"Traveling to Tehran, President Roosevelt did not have Air Force One to take him there. His first leg would be via sea. The battleship, USS Iowa transported him to Casablanca, Morocco, on the first leg of his trip.

Navy ships, even today, only have showers.
President Roosevelt being confined to a wheelchair due to polio, could not effectively use one.
The United States Navy installed a bathtub in the Commanding Officers for the President's use.
USS Iowa is the only ship in the United States Navy that has a bathtub onboard.

During WWII and the Korean War, it was the "Mighty I", and for the 1980's Cold War, it was the "Big Stick", which referred to President Teddy Roosevelt's advice: "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

Iowa also served in fast carrier task forces across the Pacific and received Battle Stars for conducting shore bombardments against Japanese forces at the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, and during the Okinawa Invasion of World War 2.

She also served as the Third Fleet flagship, flying Admiral William F. Halsey's flag at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay.

These artifacts of American history are slowly succumbing to modernization efforts,
but this wood represents a chapter of America's national fabric that is worthy of safeguarding.

Due to the age of the wood no two products will be exactly the same.

This piece is hand made by myself in my home shop in Maine.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this letter opener.

Finish:

No polyurethane applied
Before applying the finish this pen is sanded from 80 to 12,000 grit to make it smooth to the touch.
Then a friction polish is applied to the piece which gives it a smooth shine still maintaining the feel of wood.

Care:

* Wood can be prone to scratches and wear.
* The natural oils in your hands can degrade the finish and become dull from repeated use.
* Apply quality furniture polish and buff with soft cloth.
* Do not use abrasives.
* Do not expose to extreme temperatures as the wood could expand and contract causing cracking.
