SIGNED HATTIE CARNEGIE 1950's Gold Toucan Brooch - Excellent Condition - Measures 1 & 1/2 " in Height order
STUNNING 1950's HATTIE CARNEGIE GOLDTONE TOUCAN BROOCH Signed "Hattie Carnegie" on back.
STUNNING 1950's HATTIE CARNEGIE GOLDTONE TOUCAN BROOCH. Signed "Hattie Carnegie" on back. Excellent (dare I say nearly pristine) condition - has definitely been much loved and well cared for by previous owner. Sparkling Gold Dust Finish with the tiniest red faux ruby eye. The gold color is so vibrant, it was hard to get clear pics - any shading in the pics are due to my own lack of photography talent - there are no blemishes or tarnishing on this piece, whatsoever. Such wonderful detail, you can even see his little nostrils! Measures 1 1/2 inches in height, just under an inch in width at the widest point at the beak. He's just the most ADORABLE feathered friend to add to your vintage brooch collection - he has so much personality! Perfect accessory to wear pinned to a cute hat, a lovely vintage sweater or the lapel of your ladylike mid century suit - especially if that suit is a Carnegie design!
Hattie Carnegie is best known for her clothing designs. Born Henrietta Kanengeiser, the daughter of an Austrian tailor in 1889. She opened her first clothing store in 1909 and chose the moniker “Carnegie” as an homage to business tycoon, Andrew Carnegie, whom she greatly admired. She began designing “cocktail jewelry” (now called costume jewelry) in 1939 to complement her clothing designs. Both her clothing & jewelry designs were favorites of many famous Hollywood actresses including Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer and Joan Fontaine. Her designs are very diverse in part to the variety of materials her designs used and the diversity of designers she hired to work under her. Kenneth Jay Lane, former Dior designer who started his own (highly collectible) line in the 1960's, designed for Hattie Carnegie in the 1950's. She passed away in 1956 and her husband, after trying to run her company for a few years, sold her brand to Larry Josephs in the mid-1960's. Joseph maintained the brand until 1976. Hattie Carnegie designs are rather rare (particularly those predating the 1960's) and highly collectible.
