This pendant features a raw, uncut rich orange Gobi agate / chalcedony from Mongolia. The stone measures 0.95 x 0.85 inches (24.2 x 21.7 mm) and is set in sterling silver wire.
Gobi agates are an unusual variety of agate found in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia (though I am not sure if it is Inner Mongolia in China, or in Mongolia the country). They are found loose, and often show some order minor natural smoothing, though usually surface features are well preserved. It is these surface features, combined with their range of colors, that have made this variety famous. Rather than being cut and polished like most agates they are typically kept in the rough and appreciated for these natural patterns. They often show unusual webbed or orbed surface patterns, giving them a unique and unusual beauty.
This stone is an unusual example, with a clear outside around a rich orange core of carnelian. On top of that it is a very translucent stone with a striking, naturally weathered surface.
