This is a Civil War naval account by James Russell Soley. Soley was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1850. He graduated from Harvard College in 1870 and received his law degree from Columbian University (now George Washington University) in 1890. He had an illustrious career, which included serving as the superintendent of the Naval War Records Office in the Bureau of Navigation, head of the Office of Naval Records and Library, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy. While with the Office of Naval Records and Library, he began collecting the naval documents of the Civil War and initiated the publication of The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. The Sailor Boys of '61 is one of many books and articles that Soley published on American naval history.
