THE PLACE OF PITCHER'S IN TURKISH HISTORY

In Turkish, the word Pitcher is called IBRIK.

The ewer, which is frequently used by the Turks for personal cleaning, was used both as a cleaning tool and as an ornament by adorning it with beautiful handmade motifs in the living rooms. Although it is not used much in cleaning in the modern age, it still continues to be used as a home decoration on table tops and showcases. Ibrik, which forms the bright face of the dark middle ages with its aesthetic beauty and grandeur of appearance, is a gift to the art history of the Great Seljuks, who established a state in the Near East and Anatolia, and its successor, the Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman Turks. The ewer has been a symbol of cleanliness, thrift, worship and respect for elders for hundreds of years. There were officials called “İbrikdar” or “Ser-İbriki” in the palaces of Turkish-Islamic rulers. He was a high-ranking and salaried official. He used to carry out the cleaning service of the Sultan.

Among the people, the little ones would pour water into the hands of the elders with the ewer. He always prayed for the little one who poured water on his hand. In polite and cultured families, Ibriks always had a filtered Basin. The dowry of Turkish girls to be married included Ibrik and Basin. Although the ewer has lost its historical function, it adorns Turkish houses as a memory of the past.
