The Alhambra in Granada is one of the most visited monuments in the world. In the decoration we have the mosaics, an additive medium in which one piece follows another. Their use is known, at least, since the fourth millennium before Christ. The mosaics in the Alhambra are used for two reasons. One is due to aesthetic reasons. The other is related to the representation of the idea of Islam. But, because religion does not allow to represent God graphically, ideas, concepts or epigraphs are used. Thus, the three main decorative elements are geometric designs, calligraphic elements and floral ornaments. What is so exceptional about the Alhambra mosaics? The exceptionality is related to the way in which symmetry operations can be combined to fill the space. These combinations are called symmetry groups and it was at the end of the 19th century when Federov showed that the plane is only completely covered with 17 combinations (symmetry groups). When we analyze the Alhambra mosaics we are surprised: it is the only monument in the world where all 17 groups of Federov are represented. This is a 14th century design made with the mathematical knowledge of the end of the 19th century. There are two possible interpretations. The first one is to think that the decorators of the Alhambra knew all the mathematical theory that Federov developed, which is not very probable. The other is that since there is a direct relationship between our concept of beauty and that of symmetry, the designers of the mosaics reached a very high intuitive level of abstraction. Something that tells us that in order the Alhambra we enjoy its beauty and its science.
