Two different vintage Chinese cinnabar beads - one a red oval one and one a black one have been combined in a long dangling earring. Ornate silver plated bead caps separate these two beads for another texture and for definition.

A rare find - these unusual OVAL shaped Chinese cinnabar beads from the 1940s are in excellent condition and have ornate carving on them in both floral and a swirled design. Each bead is approximately 1/2" in width and 5/8" in length.
If you are lucky enough to find vintage Chinese cinnabar beads, they are from the 1970s-1980s and in a round shape.
These beads are approximately 80 yrs old !
So to have come across these oval beads so many years ago was a real discovery!

The vintage Chinese black cinnabar bead also showcases both carved flowers as well as a scroll design and are approximately 5/8" in diameter and are from the 1970s

►Genuine cinnabar beads are made from a lacquer which is derived from a tree sap found in China. The tree is tapped like a maple and the resulting gum is purified by heating and then made into lacquer by adding a solvent. This resulting lacquer is slowly added in many layers over a wood base. The lacquer can be colored in various hues including black, red, green, yellow and brown although most people are only aware of the red cinnabar.
These many layers of lacquer are then hand carved with intricate order designs representing various symbols or images found in nature such as birds and flowers.

In the modern jewelry industry, natural material is often replaced by resin -based polymers approximating the appearance of pigmented lacquer. These polymers come in various colors such as black, brown, green, red, and yellow.
