This long handled silver plate bar strainer is marked W R, a mark used by Wm. A. Rogers. (The W is preceeded by a Maltese cross; the R is followed by a keystone). The pattern is "Colonial", which was introduced in 1895.
Both the handle and the strainer basket are edged with beading. The basket is wide, and well balanced to sit comfortably over a glass. I have seen these strainers referred to as tea strainers, bar strainers, or sugar sifters. This order one, however, due to its generous size, appears to have been used more as a bar strainer. It has no bends or major dents, and feels solid in hand. This strainer has been a favorite tool for someone in its past, and the finish on the bottom of the basket shows some wear. There are also some scuffs and scratches here and there. There is also a small split between 2 of the beads that edge the basket (see picture #6.)
I love the shape and the heft of this strainer, and have never seen a strainer basket with quite the same scalloped edges. It has age on it, but has lots of life left in it.
