This is a superb quality Edwardian period hand vice dating to around 1910.
It was made in Sheffield by Elgin Tool Factors who specialised order in vices, bench anvils & other small cast tools for jewellery & watch making, light engineering & craft work.
It belonged to a WW1 Royal Navy craftsman who was tasked with maintaining the wonderful ships clocks, binnacle compasses & gyroscope mechanisms essential to navigation.
All cast tool steel, it has a straight bar double turn screw with textured jaws & a V groove wire or pin holder. The handle is mahogany stained pine with a steel ferule.
The jaws are 1 1/2” wide & open to a maximum of about 1 1/2” (40cm nominal) with a 3/4” drop to the centre bar. 18cm long. 470g weight.
Stamped ETF with the War Department broad arrow, both in the Elgin ‘Cauldron' trade mark.
In excellent antique condition with a smooth, well oiled action, it closes squarely & tightly. It has a lovely patina of age & use with a few surface marks & dents as shown. Please have a good look at all the photos.
