ABOUT:
Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne: The Humble Leader
The Irish monk, Saint Aidan, studied at Iona and was eventually sent to the northern region of England. There he founded the monastery of Lindisfarne and became its first Bishop. Aidan brought with him a love and gentleness that few leaders possess. As a disciple of Christ, he chose to lead as the humble servant of God had done so before him. Aidan never sought for power or control, but relinquished it all for the love of God and those he served.
Aidan chose the same mode of transportation as that of the commoner which was walking. To ride a horse would place him above the people, both literally in looking down on them and figuratively through wealth.
There is a story told that one day King Oswald, who was a friend of Aidan's, did indeed give him a horse so he could travel greater distances and get to Lindisfarne when the water's rose; Lindisfarne is an island off the east coast of northern England completely surrounded by water at high tide. Reluctantly, Aidan took the horse and rode off. He soon encountered a beggar and since he had nothing of value on him, gave the bewildered man his horse. When the King heard of his foolish act he confronted him, only to have Aidan reply, “Surely you don't value this son of a mare above this son of God.”
Aidan also resisted pressure to impose all the Christian laws on unchurched people before they had come to know and love Jesus and the milk of his teaching.
