Owl Mug Pottery Handmade by order Daisy Friesen

This mug would make a great gift for the coffee or hot tea drinker in your life.

I made this mug on the potter's wheel in my Kansas studio. I decorated the surface using the Sgraffito tecnique combined with the addition of velvet underlgazes. Sgraffito is the process of applying layers of contrasting slip to unfired pottery, and then scratching to reveal parts of the underlying clay. In this case I applied 4 to 6 coats of black slip on white clay. I hand painted the owl design with velvet underglazes. After the mug had been fired once, I glazed the inside and top edge in golden yellow glaze and covered the lower part of the mug with a shiny clear glaze. I then fired the mug in oxidation to about 2100 degrees Fahrenheit.

This mug will hold 24 oz. of your favorite beverage. It is 4.25 order inches (10.8 cm) tall and 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) in diameter.
