Tattered quilts that have outlived their usefulness are repurposed as backgrounds for these fabric order collage art pieces. A “painting” blossoms with the addition of images cut from fabrics - vintage and new - that are hand stitched with embroidery floss to these beautiful, sometimes colorful, sometimes elaborately stitched quilts. Each is unique. Imperfections of background and stitching are common and the edges are sometimes visible within the case. Basic black cases/frames protect each piece and they are ready to hang.
S9.INDONESIA (SERIES 9) is created from a very large Indonesian bed coverlet purchased at an estate sale in Maui and estimated to be 25-30 years old. The coverlet is assembled with squares made from large geometric patterned and solid rayon fabric creating a contemporary or modern look. Before beginning collage, the pieces are backed by a cotton fabric attached to the piece by rows of zig-zag stitching, strengthening and filling in where there may be tattered or disintegrating fabric. Because of the bold fabric designs, these were embellished with a “light” hand and mostly in a contemporary style. 12X12. Colors are predominantly in the “blue” family and will have great impact if hung in groupings to create a larger square of abstraction and color.
