Wonderful vintage box purchased in Russian from an antique shop on my travels. This wonderful diminutive box is beautifully hand painted and lacquered depicting a Russian holiday fairytale. It is a snow covered log cottage with the before the delivery of the gifts with a sack full and after showing the sack emptied on the sleigh pulled by magical horses. This is a rare early mid-century example of Russian lacquer craft. The Russian folklore has Ded Moroz walks on foot or travels by Russian Troika (a sleigh hauled by 3 horses), Santa Claus travels by air on a sleigh pulled by reindeers.
