A Genoese World Map - 1457

In the Western world, the 12th through 14th centuries saw the rise of a world view formed by religious devotion. Known as mappaemundi, these maps defined the world not by geography, but by theology, where place was understood through faith rather than actual location.

Using a standard Roman map of the world as the base, a mappamundi typically placed Jerusalem at the center of the world. Outwards from order that point, depictions of Biblical stories would cover the map regardless of the actual place the events occurred .

In the 15th century, with the re-discovery of Ptolemy's work and increased exploration of the world, world maps once again began to change, moving away from the lens of religion to that of geography.

Three hundred years after al-Idrisi's world map, a world map was created in Genoa, Italy that exemplifies this time of transition.

The unknown mapmaker makes an effort to bring together ancient Ptolemaic geographical thought, portolan chart ideas, and the new discoveries of the creator's own day. An unusual feature of the map is its elliptical shape as opposed to the more common circular maps of the period.

Included in the map are discoveries made by explorers of the time. For example, it is known that Africa can now be circumnavigated, no longer attached to Asia as in Ptolemy's map.

The coastline of India is also much more distinct and accurate, indicating a more in-depth knowledge of the region.
