The first edition by the Argonaut Press of Sir Francis Drake's account of his circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577 to 1580, which inaugurated an era of conflict with the Spanish on the western coast of the Americas, previously mostly unexplored by Western shipping. An edition limited to nine hundred and seventy five copies printed on Japon Vellum, this copy numbered eight hundred and eighty three. Edited by N.M. Penzer. With an appreciation of Drake's achievement by Richard Carnac Temple. The present volume comprises 'The World Encompassed by Sir Francis Drake' reprinted from the 1628, and selected contemporary documents analogous to his test, which include Francis Fletcher's notes, John Cooke's narrative, Edward Cliffe's story, and much more. Illustrated with a facsimile of the 1628 title page of Sir Francis' work, and a facsimile of order the original XVIth century map of Drake's voyage as well as other maps in text. Collated, complete. Condition Report: In the original publisher's quarter vellum binding over cloth boards. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some darkening to the spine, with some sunning to the cloth to the front and rear boards. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean, some leaves are unopened, including the title page. Illustrated with a facsimile of the 1628 title page of Sir Francis' work, and a facsimile of the original XVIth century map of Drake's voyage. Collated, complete. Overall: Very Good Indeed
