A wonderful set of primitive antique hand carder paddles, or cards, were used to clean dirt and debris out of the fleece of sheep after they had been sheared in the early spring. Then a small amount of fleece was placed on top of one paddle and then with the other paddle the fleece was 'combed' until it was clean and soft and fluffy. It was then rolled into a 'cigar' shape, called a 'rolag', and set aside for the next step, which was spinning the fleece into yarn. The wool yarn was then woven to cloth, which was then fashioned into clothes, blankets, and other everyday necessities.
The metal teeth on order the inside of the paddles are held in place with leather strips which are secured with tacks, or nails around the border. The carding paddles are made of wood, which has a great warm rich patina from many years of use.
The antique hand carder paddles are in antique condition with wear from age and use and measure 9" x 9 1/4".
