The procedure for making ceramics according to the technique "Raku", in short, is the following: The order object is molded by hand or with the lathe. The material of the dough must be refractory, that is, resistant to temperature fluctuations. While the first cooking is done in a traditional way, the second is made in special ovens, from which, once the melting temperature of the enamels (900 °) is reached, the "biscuit" is extracted, with special pliers, and placed to cool in containers , hermetically sealed, containing dried leaves, grass, sawdust or paper. The pieces, still incandescent, cause the combustion of the materials contained in the container, forming within the same a reducing atmosphere, which contributes to produce a series of characteristic effects on the surface of the enamels and on the clay ; During this phase the Craquelé effect of the enamel is created.
To obtain the formation of lustres and reflections, a chemical reaction of the metallic oxides present in the enamels and the clay is first created, then, by immersing the piece in the water, the obtained effect is consolidated.
All these operations must be carried out very quickly and allow, giving free rein to the imagination and creativity, to practice countless variants to the procedure indicated, obtaining increasingly different and particular effects.
