This charming pen holder represents the best of vintage kitsch. The tray itself is fashioned like an upside-down hollow log or a trough. A large dog's head emerges from the other side of the tray the dog's paws hooked over the edge as though he is reared up against the log and is steadying himself against the log. The dog's heavy features, blunt nose, and long ears make me think it may be intended to be a Labrador retriever. Which gives the impression that perhaps the log should be viewed as floating on water, the dog has swum up to the side and is peering over the side. The dog is depicted in a fairly realistic manner, the casting was nicely modeled with detailed features and texture that convincingly mimics the dog's fur and whiskers. The manner in which the piece is done seems reminiscent of Black Forest carvings, without picking it up and feeling the weight and order the cool surface of the metal, one might almost mistake it for carved wood. Even the texture on the inner surface of the tray gives the impression of roughly hewn wood.
The holder was made from a single piece of metal which was hollow cast. It has a bronze patina, but it is difficult to tell what the actual metal is. The hole in the bottom that allowed the piece to be hollow cast without joints is covered with a piece of green felt or baize. The felt is a recent addition, but it is likely that the piece was originally felted in the same manner and this is simply a replacement.
