Stanley No. 18 Block Plane with Knuckle Joint Lever order Cap, A decent 6 inch long 2 inch wide Stanley No 18 block plane This model like many others.
A decent 6 inch long, 2 inch wide Stanley No. 18 block plane. This model, like many others, used a 1 5/8 inch cutter. This example has seen a fair amount of use, judging by the wear on the palm rest. The nickel on the knuckle joint lever cap is worn on one side from this use.
The metal on the sides and bottom is quite dark as it usually gets over time.
Along with the knuckle joint lever cap, you also got a nickel plated front knob, order although it is mostly gone on this example.
These are really just a fancy no. 9 1/2, Besides the lever cap and plated knob, everything else is the same. This must have been popular with the woodworker's of yore, since Stanley offered them from 1888-1950. The āVā logo dates this to between 1910 and 1918.
The mouth closes almost completely. All the metal is fine with no cracks, chips or breaks. There is about 3/4 of an inch of the cutter left.
It is really important when using the knuckle joint lever cap, that you don't get it too tight. The cutter seat is relatively thin so excessive pressure can cause the corners by the mouth to crack.
This one seems to have escaped that problem, although this tends to be more of a problem with the low angle planes.
This will make a great user once the edge has been honed.
