Habitat: It is most abundant on moist, rich, black soils. In British Columbia, hemp-nettle is found in cultivated fields, pastures, roadsides, and disturbed habitats, but also in wooded areas and forest margins. It is present in all agricultural regions of the province.
Hemp-nettle tolerates a wide range of temperatures and soil types but appears best adapted to moist soils. It is most abundant on moist, rich, black soils. In BC this weed is found in cultivated fields, pastures, roadsides, disturbed habitats, and open forests

Plant Description: Hemp nettle is an annual weed; the square, branching stem is swollen at the joints and covered with bristly, downward-pointing hairs. The opposite, ovate, coarsely toothed leaves are from 2-5 inches long and bristly on both sides.
Dense, whorled, terminal or auxiliary clusters of pale magenta, 2-lipped flowers with bell-shaped, spiny calyxes appear from June to October.
Life cycle: Seeds germinate in early spring after overwintering in the soil. Additional seeds can germinate throughout the growing season if conditions are favorable.
Flowering occurs from July to September, depending on geographic location. Late emerging seedlings may not mature because seeds often are shed before they mature.
