Sixth Plate Ambrotype of an order Odd Child

This is a vintage Ambrotype most likely taken during the late 19th century between 1854 and 1866 and it depicts a young boy with an odd expression. The portrait is encased in a brass mat and foil frame. It measures approximately 2.75" x 3.25" or commonly referred to as a sixth plate. It's secured in an embossed leather case typical for images of that period, but it's coming apart and shows wear. It serves to provide some protection when handled or in storage.

An ambrotype is a positive image on glass and each is a unique original. The photographic emulsion was applied to a glass plate, exposed, and developed. It was typically mounted or encased with some type of dark background as black paper, cloth, or painted metal so as to order provide contrast when viewing though occasionally the backside of the glass was painted black.
